Flawed characters who highlight the internal struggles we sometimes face in real life. In the past few seasons of television, we have watched as more complex characters are introduced to us. Thankfully, with recent TV series such as Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, HBO’s Insecure and NBC’s This Is Us, it appears that things are starting to finally shift. Leaving most viewers feeling triggered by what they just watched. The mental health experiences of these characters were often sensationalized and/or stigmatized. The difficulties we faced were hidden from the world and certainly not accurately reflected in the characters we watched on our television screens. Unfortunately, the series came to an end after four seasons in June 2023. Never Have I Ever premiered on Netflix around the same time as Outer Banks, although Never Have I Ever is a full season ahead. It’s one of the best teen Netflix shows of all time. If you’re into teen comedy, you can’t go wrong with Never Have I Ever. The series tells the story of Devi, a high schooler from California who is learning how to navigate life, relationships, school, and so much more. The series was created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher. Never Have I Ever premiered on Netflix in April 2020, the same month that we were first introduced to John B, Sarah Cameron, Pope, JJ, and Kie.
